![]() ![]() When things quiet down probably next season, I hope to see Pride nights continue and players wearing jerseys, at the end of it, they’re just about inclusion. The bigger question to me, the Sharks would’ve faced tremendous backlash, especially as a Bay Area team, if they had backed out this year. Second, the San Jose Sharks didn’t renege on wearing Pride jerseys like the Rangers and Wild did, but again, it’s sad to give credit for something that I think should be a given. ![]() So two things to close: First, I do hope to see every Sharks player in a Pride jersey, and if not, they should say it’s because they’re worried about Russian laws or why they’d be against including everybody in hockey. San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer won’t take part in pregame warmups Saturday night, saying the team’s decision to wear Pride-themed jerseys in support of the LGBTQ. Sports inclusion organization You Can Play put it well: “It’s a simple sign of respect that goes a long way to promote a sense of belonging for those needing to see it.” That’s the core of the Pride hockey jersey, right? San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer will boycott the teams warmup skate before its home game against the New York Islanders on Saturday because his teammates will wear jerseys that support. My belief is they’re allowing the players to choose. Opening Night game action gets underway at 6:00 pm PT. The San Jose Sharks announced that players would be wearing Pride jerseys, but so far, they’ve declined to say if every player will wear one. That law states it’s “illegal to spread ‘propaganda’ about ‘nontraditional sexual relations’.” The Wild claimed they were protecting their Russian players – they have one, star Kirill Kaprizov, from reprisal on the players and/or their families from Russia’s anti-gay laws. Then, the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild, who had previously announced they were wearing Pride jerseys, backed out last minute. ![]() A more complete Civilization experienceĪll this production quality isn't just lipstick on a pig. Put simply, this game just looks and sounds terrific. The new theme music, "Sogno Di Volare" isn't as immediately catchy as "Baba Yetu", but it's still an uplifting, memorable track that stands out more than the menu themes of Civ V. Firaxis even brought back composer Christopher Tin for some of the music. There's more historic quotes, all of which are narrated wonderfully by Sean Bean. It isn't quite as pretty as Civ IV's pre-rendered wonder movies, but makes up for it by providing a sense of context that makes me feel like I'm seeing " my Oracle" instead of just the Oracle. Finishing a wonder results in an in-game cutscene of that wonder's construction. There's actual cinematics for the win screens instead of dialogue boxes with a static image. ![]() The rest of the game shows similarly high production quality. Improvements have different graphics for when they're un-worked versus worked. Heck, there's even an animated day/night cycle that was seemingly added because. This game renders the fog of war with the style of a hand-drawn map on canvas (similar to Total War: Shogun 2, which I loved). The fog of war is also wonderfully functional and neat to look at. It's attractive, but it's also clean and informative. There's even different graphics to represent the different phases of a building or wonder's construction that tells you exactly what that city is currently constructing, and how close it might be to finishing that wonder. You can see every piece of infrastructure in and around a city, as well as exactly which tiles are being worked, all without having to open a separate screen and without having to clutter the screen with extra UI icons. Almost everything on the game map is communicating part of the state of the game to the player. What I really like is how utilitarian the visuals are. Everything that you see on screen genuinely means something. The graphics are vibrant and highly informative. VI, on the other hand, goes for an exaggerated, vibrant, and more cartoonish look that reminds me a lot more of Civ IV and Civ Revolution. This created a lot of pretty screenshots (still images), but the game looked kind of static, washed-out, and dull in motion. ![]() Many screenshots of the game's map look like satellite photos, and units (though exceedingly large) looked and animated realistically. Civ V favored a semi-photo realistic quality. It's a pretty stark contrast from Civilization V's visuals. The first thing that stood out to me upon entering my first game was the artwork. I'll get back to all those things after one more turn. My board game collection has been collecting dust, and my Dungeons & Dragons campaigns have been on hiatus. I've barely scratched the surface of the newly-released Dark Souls III DLC, my Madden franchise has fallen behind, and I haven't even bothered buying recently-released games like the new Master of Orion. They've also ensured that I don't get very much productive done during the months of October and November this year, since I've been sinking a whole lot of time into "one more turn"-ing myself late into the night. The result has been a widening cumulative death rate in America’s rural regions. As of early 2023, 35% of rural Americans had still never received a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, compared with just 15% of people in cities. As antivaccine sentiment spread in conservative media and on social media platforms like Facebook, the disparity worsened. As vaccines were first becoming available in early 2021, 35% of rural respondents in a Kaiser Family Foundation survey said they wouldn’t get the shots, compared with 26% of urban dwellers. Rural Americans also tended to be more susceptible to vaccine misinformation. For them, a death is both an event and an absence, a continuous reverberation of loss, which they relive over and over. But for those who lost loved ones, the body in the ground is only the beginning. The death rate was one of the highest in the country, and three times that of the nation as a whole.įor those who didn’t lose friends or family to COVID-19, it can be easy to think of deaths during the pandemic as discrete events, a weekly figure erased and replaced with another number the following week. By the summer of 2022, the virus had killed nearly 1 out of every 100 people in the county-123 deaths for about 13,000 residents. Local papers printed multipage obituary sections, and the Yesels worked 18-hour days to handle the bodies. Nearly a third of one nursing home’s 67 residents died from the virus. Deaths followed, with some people dying at local hospitals, and others succumbing to the virus at home, suffocating while they slept. By July, they were reporting dozens every week. Then, in June, more cases started trickling in. Cities like New York and Los Angeles were reporting mass deaths-but these farming towns only had a handful of COVID-19 cases from March to May 2020. In Lamb, the permanent effects are just more visible, a reminder of the magnitude of what we’ve lost, and how little we’ve reckoned with it.īack in early 2020, many people here thought the pandemic might pass them by. ![]() These also weren’t the only regions that suffered-the pain, the losses, the lingering division left by the pandemic can be found almost anywhere in the country. What happened here is typical of a broader, little-noticed disaster across flyover America. There are many places like Lamb County around the country- poor, rural towns, susceptible to misinformation, which were suffering even before the pandemic, and have now taken another body blow. But amid tides of contradictory news and misinformation, many have little idea of who to blame. Others are still angry about what they’ve gone through-about the mothers, husbands, children they will never see again. Many people continue to believe conspiracy theories that circulated during the pandemic, that the virus was all a hoax, or that it was never as bad as health authorities made it out to be. Some of those who died were pillars of the local community, and their loss has further crippled towns that already seemed to be fading into the endless, empty landscape. For many others, nothing will ever be the same. For some people, the lucky ones, it’s like nothing ever happened. It’s a topic that defies easy explanations. Now, with deaths slowing and the pandemic slipping out of the public consciousness a year and a half later, I was back to write about what moving on looks like here-if such a thing is even possible. In fact, the mad concoction of blood, gore, and boobs makes the film what it is one big guilty pleasure. Such scenes (and more) are absolute gold, the key to the film's almost accidental success. A nude beauty meets her end by the swimming pool, a young woman sun tanning gets way more than a tan, a kindly lady gets slaughtered in an elevator, and yes, some girl even gets the bottom half of her body sawed off creating one of the most famous - or infamous - stills from the entire movie. High on gore and low on logic there are some fantastic kills to be found here, if you find yourself able to survive through the thick much that is the story and the dialogue first. My favorite aspect of the film was the murder sequences. It does indeed only get one thing right (the gore effects, which are outstanding), but if you're as twisted as me, that's essentially enough to satisfy. However, if you can distance yourself from the said flaws, it's the kind of crappy movie that's so bad it's kind of good, or even great. ![]() So basically, it's a critic's worst nightmare. It's a movie of corny dialogue, terrible dubbing, mediocre performances and even worse emotional reactions, poor plotting, and uninvolving character development. ![]() "Pieces" would not be an entertaining film if it weren't so goddamn bad. All you need to know is that the identity of the killer is terribly (or rather, terrifically) obvious from the start. There's a plethora of characters, although they're all so unnecessary any one of them could be the killer, but the film throws so many red herrings and false alarms in our face that we stop caring about the little implications of the story. Fast-forward about forty years later, and we've got the college campus with a killer on the loose, hacking his way through the students, not much unlike what the kid did to his poor (and unnecessarily frustrated at the time) mother. The police arrive shortly thereafter and discover the horrific remains of the incident. So yeah, the madness all begins back in 1941 when a young child is piecing together a puzzle that his mother finds crude and inappropriate thus causing her to throw a big fit, threatening to burn anything else in the kid's room that she deems unsuitable for his age group. I was very entertained by it, and while it's not my favorite Grindhouse film, it's still pretty solid for what it is. It's not the most populace pleasing film out there, but it's unique and easy-going enough. It belongs in the collection of most avid horror fans, and it deserves to be seen perhaps there's still an audience out there that we're not aware of, because they have yet to discover this violent, gruesome gem. All-in-all, I'm pretty glad they brought this long-lost exploitation/sleaze classic back from the dead. To others, they'd be good reason to stay far away.īeloved by some, and surely despised by a good many "Pieces" has been re-issued and restored by Grindhouse Releasing, and if you happen to get the chance, it can be found on DVD (courtesy of both Grindhouse and Box Office Spectaculars). It's cheesy, unnecessary, vile, and gross but when you frequent the Grindhouse side of cinema, those are merely charms and simple pleasures. It's a sleazy, morally and artistically irredeemable celebration of exploitation and schlock. But then again, anyone watching this film will most likely leave all complaints at the door, ready to just go along for the ride because that's really all this movie is. What you get is a cross-breed of slasher and detective narrative clichés something that's not so much a story but more like an experience. ![]() Most of the film takes place at a New England college campus where a chainsaw-wielding psychopath is joyously slicing and dicing his way through pretty men and women, although preferably and mostly the latter.
